RESIDENTS

The 18-units of the Ellwanger and Barry Condominium are owned and occupied by individuals who fell instantly in love with the unique style and character of the former school. In fact, many of the "Schoolmates" are original owners, having lived in the building since the first offering, in 1980. And, at least one is a former student!

Besides the historical significance and exceptional architecture, residents have taken pride in living in a quiet, centrally located city neighborhood. The gymnasium offers the space to entertain large groups of guests and the playground across the street is a real treat for grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Schoolmates appreciate being just minutes from downtown with it's theaters and museums, walking distance to one of Rochester's most celebrated parks and the easy access to the interstate.

MANAGEMENT

Owners of each condo belong to the Ellwanger & Barry Homeowners Association, whereby monthly dues are collected to fund common services and maintenance of common elements. The EBHA is managed by:

~The Board of Managers which consists of a team of 5 condo-unit owners who oversee the operations of the property. The positions held by the board are the President, Secretary, Treasurer and Project Manager.

~ Special ad-hoc committees.

SCHOOLMATES IN ACTION

Besides working on preserving the building's structure, residents are taking a proactive approach to improving their community.

1) The use of lawn chemicals, (a source of never-ending debate with no alternate means of preserving the land of horticulturist's, Mr. Ellwanger & Mr. Barry), has hopefully come to a peaceful and effective solution. Through months of investigations, residents Norm Levy and Carol McElroy have adopted a new method to care for the lawns using nontoxic lawn products.

2) A special committee has been formed to research and apply for grants to aid in the preservation of our historical building.

4) The webpage, EllwangerandBarry.com was developed by Lynne Menz and is now maintained by Gregory Brady.  Its purpose is to answer the passer-byer's question "I've always wondered what that building is!", not to mention to promote the historic and contributory significance of the former school and it's neighborhood.
